Lunchtime Chen Style with Keith Davis Chen style Tai Chi Chuan focuses on nurturing mind, body and spirit. We will work on improving our health, learning to relax and focus our awareness, and begin to understand the self-defense aspects of Tai Chi. About Chen Style Taiji: This style of Chen Taiji is very comprehensive. The first and most important emphasis is on nurturing ourselves. We begin this with Qigong exercises; exercises that facilitate the smooth flow of Chi throughout the Body/Mind/Spirit. These exercises include both static and moving forms. The static forms include standing meditation in various postures, as well as sitting and even lying-down meditation. The moving forms work with gentle movement coordinated with the breath and most importantly, the intent. Opening and closing, expanding and contracting, gathering Chi, circulating Chi, these are all trained with Qigong. Next are the Silk Reeling exercises. These are various moving postures extracted from the form and practiced repetitively. As in all of the Chen practices, circular movements are emphasized. All of the joints of the body are gently stretched and rotated, and proper balance and shifting of the weight are trained in preparation for incorporating these movements into the form practice. The Taiji routines include what are known as the “first and second routines,” the first being a 48 movement form that emphasizes the more internal aspects of the style. The second routine is also known as Pao Cui, and is more concerned with the martial aspects, or harder, more external aspects of the style. There are also various weapons routines, including the sword and saber. In this beginning class the first 7 movement forms will be taught. Drop-ins are welcome. Students should wear loose comfortable clothing and good support shoes.
